The Coralville plant will be an expansion of Backpocket Brewing’s current brewing operations at Old Man River Restaurant & Brewery in McGregor, Iowa. Old Man River was the dream of Dave and Marci Strutt, McGregor natives who set out to create the finest brewpub in Iowa. Jake Simmons, the Brewmaster, expanded this vision to produce world-class beers for the entire state. As such, Backpocket Brewing was created to distribute packaged beer, which it has done as draft only for the past year. The new production plant will allow Backpocket to expand its packaging options to also include bottles. It is projected that Backpocket will produce 7,000 to 8,000 bbls of beer in is first year, with the total capacity to make 25,000 bbls of beer.
Backpocket Brewing focuses on German-inspired beers, using traditional German brewing techniques and adhering to the German purity laws. The result is beer that is as flavorful as it is drinkable. The new brewery facility will include a state-of-the-art German brew house that will be a pioneer in sustainable brewing. Its innovative design allows for a reduction of carbon consumption by 60%, recapture of water waste, and composting of organic waste. The result will be a cutting edge, world class brewery in the Iowa River Landing.
