Making the World’s Largest Truckstop Even Bigger
Just a few miles northwest of Davenport, Iowa sits a place that some refer to as a Trucker’s Disneyland and others call a small city. The Iowa 80 Truckstop, or more commonly known as the World’s Largest Truckstop, has been in business for 54 years just outside of Walcott, IA on exit 284 and has not closed their doors once since opening day in 1964.
The Iowa 80 Truckstop features an impressive assortment of amenities, including eight restaurant choices, a convenience store, gift store, Super Truck Showroom, barber shop, chiropractor, dentist, Movie Theater, workout room, laundry facilities, gas islands, diesel fuel center, truck service center, Truck-o-mat truck wash, Dog-o-mat pet wash, CAT Scale, 24 private showers and a historical trucking museum.
Russell and Iowa 80
Iowa 80 Group and Russell are the definition of a long-term collaborative partnership. We have been fortunate enough to complete over 400,000 s.f. of new construction, addition and renovation projects in three states, over the last 14 years with Iowa 80 Group.
Currently, our team is in the midst of a complex four phase addition project at the Truckstop in Walcott. The first phase, which is the most challenging of the project, consisted of a 6,400 s.f. two-story service dock housing all new electrical switch-gear to service the building and future additions. All major utilities were relocated or altered, which was an incredible task to complete due to the need to keep the entire building 100% operational.
The second through fourth project phases consisted of a total of 40,000 s.f. of additions and renovations, including a new C-Store, expanded merchandising area, renovation to the existing food court, new family restroom and an 18’x32′ skylight addition. The existing Wendy’s, Taco Bell/Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen/Orange Julius and Caribou Coffee were all demolished to make room for new and improved versions of each of the franchises. Each new tenant space was constructed with no shut down time between the old and the new.
The project’s final phase will be starting up in the next few weeks. Even through the various challenges of the existing facility and the demand to keep the Truckstop 100% operational, our team has been able to achieve every single schedule date for the first three phases.
We’d like to thank our long-time client and partner, Iowa 80 Group, for selecting us to construct another campus changing project for them. We are excited at the difference this will make for the Iowa 80 Truckstop and the thousands of visitors to walk through its doors each year.
