Construction Begins at Galesburg CUSD #205
Construction is officially underway after a $56 MM facilities plan was approved in fall of 2018 for Galesburg Community Unit School District #205 in Galesburg, IL. This $56 MM plan sets in motion a large-scale reshaping of the school district, encompassing renovations and additions to four buildings, allowing three buildings to be decommissioned. Russell is collaborating alongside Legat Architects to plan, budget, design, and execute these projects, with the goal of improving all schools to 21st century learning environments.
The addition and renovation projects at Lombard 5-6 Intermediate, Steele Elementary and King Elementary commenced in fall of 2019 and will be ready for students at the start of the 2020/2021 school year. The key to this first year of construction hinges around the complex renovation of the existing High School kitchen and cafeteria. Currently, Galesburg CUSD runs most of its food preparation in three separate kitchens in Lombard Intermediate, Churchill Elementary and the High School. After the food is prepared at one of these three locations, it is sent out to warming kitchens at the other elementary schools. Galesburg High School will undergo an extensive cafeteria and kitchen renovation and become the central food preparation kitchen. Effective coordination and scheduling will be necessary to complete the renovations at each school and bring the High School kitchen on-line in time.
Current construction milestones include the foundation installation for the all three additions at Lombard 5-6 Intermediate, Steele Elementary, and King Elementary. The winter focus will be on constructing each building’s shell, allowing for interior work to commence in the spring on the additions; along with bidding the Central Prep Kitchen at the High School. Summer 2020 will see the most radical change as the additions wrap up and the renovations scheduled for each building reach completion, readying the schools for an expanded number of students for the 2020/2021 school year.
A major element of the Galesburg Schools Facilities Plan is a complete overhaul at the High School. This includes new heating/cooling, fire suppression, lighting, interior finishes, commons/cafeteria space, and the incorporation of grades 7-12 to the building through building renovations and additions.
Russell is excited to continue being a part of the Galesburg community and school district to bring students, staff and community members updated educational facilities. Being no stranger to Galesburg, Russell has previously collaborated with the Galesburg CUSD #205 on numerous additions, renovations and new construction projects at Lombard Middle School, Steele Elementary, Silas Willard Elementary School, and Galesburg High School.
