Excellence in Energy-Efficient Construction Award
Recognized as an Iowa leader in energy-efficient construction, Russell Construction was part of the project team that received an award for Keokuk County Healthcare Center at Alliant Energy’s 2008 Excellence in Energy-Efficient Construction program. As one of 13 projects in the state, this Critical Access Hospital received a Gold Award for its energy efficient design and construction.
As a CMa project, our healthcare team modified the scope of the project through this environmentally-friendly Value Engineering process. In this case, value engineering recommendations focused on longer-term efficiency and added only $160,000 to the initial scope and cost of the project. With supporting scientific calculations showing that these recommendations would pay for themselves in less than three years and would save the hospital $53,000 in utility costs every year thereafter, the hospital will save significant operating capital in the years to come.
In total, our recommendations will provide a 233-ton decrease in carbon dioxide emissions each year, equating to 26% electrical savings and 10% savings in natural gas. From an environmental perspective this is equivalent to removing 43 automobiles from Iowa roads, or powering 31 homes.
